The Lviv Museum of the History of Religion (the Museum, for short) was opened in 1970. It possesses collections of unique materials and tells about the history of global and national religions as well as about activities of church organisations. The exhibitions of the Museum are housed by the building of the Dominican Monastery.
The exhibitions fall into the following thematic sections: The Religions of the Ancient World, Judaism, Early Christianity, The Armenian Apostolic Church, The History of the Roman Catholic Church, The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, The Orthodox Church in Ukraine, Protestantism, Islam, and Buddhism.
The Museum consists of the following departments: the Department of Exhibitions, the Department of Research and Education, the Department of Advertisement, the Department of Methodology, the Holdings, the Logos Publishing House, the Library, the Photography and Holography Laboratories, the Department of Research and Restoration, and the Department of Art.
The holdings of the Museum contain over 50,000 exhibits. Among them, there are exhibits of unique cult, art and historical value (for example, a large collection of the 16th–19th century icons and a relatively large collection of Bibles). Torture chambers of the Holy Catholic Inquisition used to be situated in the cellars of the complex.
Visitors of the Museum are offered various services: lectures, guided tours, concerts of organ and chamber music, and consulting.
In 1629, Italian merchant Roberto Bandinelli established the first Lviv postal service, which occupied this same house.
The house was constructed in 1593 (or 1589) at the location of an older, Gothic building; fragments of the building are part of the house.
