The National Museum of the History of Ukraine (the Museum, for short) was established in the beginning of 1899 with an exposition of an archaeological exhibition in the City Museum of Antiquity and Art.
The Museum was officially opened in 1904. The exposition comprised collections of excavations belonging to founders of the Museum and many other famous archaeologists of that time. At first, the Museum existed thanks to art patrons only. However, in 1909, it was granted a state annual subsidy.
In 1935, the Museum moved to a museum city within the Kiev-Pecherskaya Laura.
During the Second World War, the Museum collection was evacuated to Ufa City, and in 1944, the exhibits were returned to Kiev. The Museum was placed on Starokievskaya Mountain in premises of the former art school. Today, the Museum is situated in the same building.
The Museum has unique archaeological, ethnographic, and numismatic collections, art works and sculptures, black letter books, and many other exhibits. The ruined Church of the Tithes or Church of the Dormition of the Virgin is situated in front of the Museum.
The Museum is one of the most visited museums in Kiev. It can be called not just a museum but a real national wealth of the Ukrainians. The extended exposition introduces the history of the whole country and allows the visitors following the formation way of Ukraine.
Today, more than 15 expositions are opened in the Museum. They tell about different stages of the Ukraine life. Some of the expositions are unique. The other ones appeared after Ukraine became independent.
The Eastern Slavs and Kievan Russia Exposition introduces the ancient history of the Ukraine state. The Exposition of the Ancient Times tells the visitors how civilization has gradually appeared in Ukraine.
The Museum has usual exhibits common for many other museums of this kind as well as quite interesting ones. Its visitors can found there a whole collection of unique items relating to one person, Serge Lifar. He was a genius Ukrainian ballet dancer of the 20th century. His fans and ballet experts called him "God of Dance" and bracketed him with equally great Vatslav Nizhinskiy.
