The Kiev Planetarium (the Planetarium, for short) at the Knowledge Society of Ukraine was founded in 1952 by the world-famous astronomer Sergey Vsekhsvyatsky.

On 1st January 1952, the Planetarium opened its doors to everybody interested in learning the mysteries of the Universe.

The Planetarium has been very successful from the very day of its foundation, with the cornerstone of this success being the staff that consists of highly-qualified, like-minded people devoted to the honourable work of disseminating knowledge about the Universe.

The Star Auditorium of the Planetarium has a dome of 23.5 meters (77 feet) in diameter and seats 320 curious spectators. In its centre, there is the main piece of equipment, a planetarium. By the way, the word "planetarium" in the sense of a theatre built primarily for presenting shows about astronomy is derived from the name of this device.

In order to run shows more efficiently, the Star Auditorium is equipped with additional projectors. And in order to keep up with the technological development, great attention is paid to equipment upgrades.

The "meetings under the starry sky" arranged by the Planetarium include entertaining shows and educational lectures that complement the secondary-school curriculum in the area of astronomy, geography, and nature study. The capabilities of the Planetarium allow to very vividly explain the laws of nature and make visitors feel what neither schools, nor books, nor television can provide.

Having selected a lecture, secondary school teachers may order it for a group of students. And everybody is invited to the weekend shows; these are fantastic star-sky shows that would interest children and adults alike.

In addition, the Planetarium runs the School of Astronomy for 7–10 year old children.

The Planetarium collaborates very actively with leading astronomy scientific institutions and planetariums of Ukraine and other countries. It is a member of the International Planetarium Society.

In 2011, the Planetarium was reconstructed and equipped to show spherical films. Now the Planetarium is not just a planetarium. It features a scientific cultural and entertaining centre ATMASFERA 360 that includes an art stage, PlayZone, Space-cafe, and a planetarium auditorium where films are shown.

Spherical film is a kind of film when an image is projected on a dome of 360-degree panorama. A spectator seats under the dome and thus can see the image around him or herself. This option is not offered by usual films, that we have used to watch. This makes the ATMASFERA 360 project unique and different from a conventional cinema.

From technological point of view, the image is projected by a digital projection system Fulldome Pro consisting of 15 projection devices. An interesting fact is that the Planetarium's screen square is 830 square meters (8,934 square feet)! The Kiev Planetarium's dome is second in Europe by its size. The full-dome projection in the Star Auditorium covers 360 degrees horizontally and 180 degrees vertically, that is very close to natural human visibility.

Films, shown in ATMASFERA 360, have been specially created by the Spherical Film Society and combine educational and entertaining elements to balance planetarium function and a show. The auditorium, where films are shown, is one of the biggest in Europe. Front Pictures Company specially produced a unique image projection system and audio feedback for this auditorium.

It is also worthwhile to say about the renewed Planetarium's interior. Its futuristic design features a huge all-round screen, alien figures, large globes, a space store and a cafe. A large-scale video panorama at the entry to the Star Auditorium changes the hall and transforms it into a multimedia space of the 21st century.

Before the show starts, one can have fun in PlayZone (a park of multimedia attractions) free of charge. Mighty-touch Wall gives detailed information about primary planets, allows playing a puzzle game and aligning the planets. Motion-e-motion is a new generation interactive video wall. As soon as one is caught by a camera, he immediately can see himself in the screen and interact with virtual objects. Cosmoball is a game, where one has to knock out space ships with soft balls and score.

The ATMASFERA 360 project continues educational traditions of the Planetarium as well as broadens world view of students and young people, and makes natural sciences like biology, nature study, astronomy, and physics popular. Popular-science films are all ages oriented. They are carefully chosen and adapted in accordance with the current school schemes. Today, one can watch full-dome educational films in the Kiev Planetarium.
