Chapel of St. Olga (Pskov)

St. Olga, Grand Duchess of Kiev, Equal-to-the-Apostles, the first Christian woman in Russia, was especially honoured in Pskov, her home town.

The city legends connect the foundation of the first Trinity Cathedral with her name. At the place, where today a chapel is situated, the Duchess saw in her bright vision three sunbeams above Kremlin, the symbol of Holy Trinity. According to the legend, after the cathedral was constructed, Olga put an oak cross in memory of this occasion.

In the 19th century, when the royal family favoured the creation of the Olga's Society, a neoclassic chapel was erected there and destroyed in the 20th century.

Recently the Olga's Society has been resumed in Pskov and put a memorial metal cross at the site of the destroyed chapel. Later, they hold a competition to choose the best chapel project that was won by the architect Alexey Krasilnikov. The Chapel was consecrated on 23 July 2000.

It was a successful solution of the modern architect to put the Chapel on a pedestal above the Velikaya River. The snow-white building greatly blends with a panoramic view of the city.
