In 1966, the Museum of the History of Pharmaceutics was established on the base of an old pharmacy opened as early as 1732 г. by Notorp, military pharmacist. In 1972, the Museum was awarded the title of National.
The ancient interior of the pharmacy's sales area has been preserved. The ceiling painted with polychrome in the early 19th century by Viennese craftsmen symbolizes four compounds of the Universe: fire, water, earth, and air.
In the salesroom near a prescription table three pharmaceutical scales are installed. Columns are used as electrical candlesticks. Ancient cash registers are displayed.
Visitors can see a unique collection of pharmaceutical wares such as pottery vases of the 15th and 16th centuries and various pharmaceutical mortars made of stone, cast iron, porcelain, copper, marble, and agate.
Pharmaceutical wares are presented in a room of materials. The exposition has samples of the first pharmaceutical manual equipment including various juice extractors for medicative herbs, drying chambers, and a rare collection of measuring devices.
Valuable documents have also found their place in the Museum: prescription journals, literature about activities of the Galicia society of pharmacists founded in 1868, photographs of its founders, and original diplomas of doctors and pharmacists.
An extended library has been collected by the Museum. It has more than 1,000 ancient medical books and over 2,000 pharmaceutical periodicals.
