The Museum of Folk Architecture and Life (the Museum, for short) is situated in an picturesque urban forest called the Shevchenkovsky Forest and is one of Europe's largest museums of this kind. The Museum occupies land that used to belong to the Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra.
The Museum was created in 1971; it is based on the ethnographic principle and is conventionally divided into 6 ethnographic zones: the Boyko zone, the Lemko zone, the Hutsul zone, the Bukovina zone, the Podoliya zone, the Volyn and Podoliya zone. The Museum was opened to the public in 1976.
It has on display tenths of monuments of folk wooden architecture. Among them are log houses, with the oldest of them being constructed in 1749, 1792, 1860, and 1887. Valuable exhibits are a village estate featuring a house and a stable constructed in 1812 and 1903 respectively, from Lychobory Village (Turka District), and a log house constructed in 1909, from Tukholska Village (Skole District). A wooden church constructed in 1763, from Krivki Village (Turka District), is a masterpiece of folk architecture and a monument of national importance. Utility and production structures such as a watermill, a windmill, a fulling mill, a sawmill and smithies are also represented. The pride of the museum is six wooden churches.
The holdings of the Museum contain thousands of items: samples of clothes and fabrics, everyday-life objects and works of folk art.
