The State Museum of the Defence of Moscow was founded in 1979. The Museum began as an exhibition dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Battle of Moscow during the World War II.

The Museum is open to the public from 1981.

In 1994, the Museum's exhibition area was under renovation and a new exhibition was under creation.

In 1995, a permanent exhibition was created. Its opening was coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Russian victory in the World War II.

The collection of the Museum contains materials on the defence of Moscow and the resounding defeat of the Wehrmacht at Moscow in 1941–1942 including private documents of Moscow defence participants and their relatives, memoirs, diaries, mails, photographs, and maps. The collection also contains pre-wartime and post-wartime materials, memoirs, and lists of veterans. The Museum's archives also store wartime newspapers purchased from collectors.

Exhibits are displayed in seven halls. The first four halls contain the following exhibitions: Invasion; Beginning of the War; Military Enlistment Office; Militia of Volunteers; Childhood Broken by the War; Construction of Defensive Fortifications; and Conversion of the Moscow Industry to Military Production. The other halls demonstrate warpaths of those divisions that fought all the way from Moscow to Berlin. The topic of the sixth hall is People's Memories. The seventh hall is dedicated to Marshal G. K. Zhukov and also contains memoirs and fiction on the Battle of Moscow.

The most valuable collections:
– samples of military uniform;
– Soviet and German military decorations;
– a collection of mails and diaries of war participants;
– firearms;
– a collection of photographs made by front-line reporters;
– a collection of German newspapers, flyers, mails of soldiers and officers from the Army Group Centre;
