The Maxim Gorky Culture Centre (the Centre, for short) is one of Saint Petersburg's leading concert halls. This is the first so-called "palace of culture" (culture centre) in Russia. It was constructed in 1926–1927 to a design by Aleksandr Gegello and David Krichevsky. In 1937, at Exposition Universelle in Paris, Gegello was awarded with a Grand Prix diploma for this design. Before the Russian Revolution, the site of the Centre was occupied by a wooden school.
