The Oktyabr Cinema (the Cinema, for short) was built in 1967 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Soviet Union and was an element of an architectural ensemble of Kalinina Avenue (1962–1967). According to the General Plan of 1935, the Avenue should connect the city centre with the west side of the capital and be one of the main symbols of the new socialistic Moscow as well as a favourite recreation site of the citizens.
New conditions of cinema development required reconstruction of the Cinema. After being redesigned the Cinema had to meet all up-to-date requirements specified for cinema centres and preserve the same appearance and its unique atmosphere of the historical site. This aim was successfully reached.
The reconstructed Cinema is the largest multiplex in Russia with eleven auditoriums seating more than 3,000 people in total. It distributes not just common films but also premieres, special screenings, and holds festivals.
The Cinema features the Main Premiere Auditorium that seats 1,518 people and is used to hold concerts and shows of the highest level as well as national and corporate solemn ceremonies.
In 2007, it was one of the first cinemas in Russia, the Big Auditorium of which was equipped with digital projection equipment providing spectators with films of the highest quality.
All the auditoriums are equipped with Dolby Surround EX systems, Simplex Millennium II and Simplex Combination projection equipment, and Harkness screens.
