The Great Moscow State Circus (the Circus, for short) was opened on 30th April 1971. Constructed to a design by a team of architects and engineers led by the famous architect Yakov Belopolsky, even now the technical capabilities of the Circus remain amazing. Another circus like that has never existed and does not exist in the whole world!
The auditorium of the Circus is a 36-metre (118-feet) high amphitheatre, which consists of 23 rows (3,400 seats). Five replaceable arenas are situated in a huge machine room 18 metres (59 feet) underground. The huge machine room is also situated here. Thanks to the very well adjusted technical and electronic equipment, it takes only 5 to 6 minutes to replace an arena. A gigantic 13-metre (43-feet) circle moves down and to a side, and then another one is pushed by "the hand of a giant" to take its place and move up. Many performances of the Circus used all the five arenas: the riding arena, the ice arena, the water arena, the magic arena, and the light arena.
The Circus has also the sixth arena, the rehearsal one. It is occupied from the very morning to late at night. Here, new circus acts are born and performers warm up before their entrances.
At the Circus, there is everything needed for creative work. Directors, ballet masters, musicians and artists help the performers to create new acts. Workshops produce costumes and props.
At present time, the Circus employs several hundreds of performers that may perform acts of almost all known circus genres. Many of the performers hold the titles of People's Artist of Russia and Meritorious Artist of Russia. What also proves their high artistic and professional level is the fact that every year they win the highest awards at the most prestigious international festivals and competitions. Complete shows as well as separate acts regularly go on tours to over 20 countries; they are performed not only at circuses, but also on theatre stages, music halls and in parks.
In 1996, the Circus celebrated its 25th anniversary by presenting the theatrical performance A Silver Show on the Vorobyovy Gory Hills staged by People's Artist of Russia Leonid Kostyuk. The performance enjoyed a great success, and 500,000 people watched it in Russia and other countries.
The Circus has presented over 100 various plot-driven as well as variety shows that involved the best performers of world circus. In 2011, the Circus turned 40. That anniversary was celebrated by a new, grandiose theatrical performance.
