Chapel of St. Spyridon of Trimythous (Saint Petersburg)

67 Bolshoy Avenue, Vasilievsky Island, Saint Petersburg, Metro station: "Vasileostrovskaya".

In 1807, in his Strelna Palace residence, Emperor Alexander I formed the Imperial Police Battalion consisting of citizens of the palace villages, mainly Finns. In 1811, it was reorganised as the Finnish Guard Regiment. The Regiment distinguished itself in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. After the war was finished, it was quartered in 65 Bolshoy Avenue, Vasilievsky Island. In this building owned by the Usilenniy Hospital, a family regiment church named after St. Spyridon of Trimythous was consecrated.

In 1903 and 1904, in honour of the 100th anniversary of the Regiment, a perfectly proportioned chapel, designed by the architect S. Kondratiev, was built in front of the building at the corner of Bolshoy Avenue and the 19th Line and assigned to the Church.

In 1919, the Church was closed, and the barracks building was handed over to the Baltic factory. For some time after that, the services were held in the Chapel. Soon it was also closed and devastated. The interior was completely destroyed. For a few years, the Chapel building was used as a flower shop.

In the late 1990s, the building was returned to the Church, and it started functioning again. An Orthodox cross was placed on the Chapel's dome.
