A mansion at 12 A Nikitsky Boulevard is an outstanding sample of the Russian classicism of the first quarter of the 19th century. It is called the Lunins' Mansion, because it was build for relatives of a famous Decembrist M. S. Lunin, according to a design by an Italian architect Domenico Gilardi.
The State Museum of Oriental Arts that occupied the Lunins' Mansion was founded on October 30, 1918. It is one of the largest culture and education centres, which presents rich collections (more than 160,000 stored items) of the Far and Middle Eastern art as well as the art of Central Asia, Caucasus, Transcaucasia, Kazakhstan, Buryatia, Chukotka, etc.
By a decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the Museum is added to the list of the most valuable objects of cultural inheritance. The Museum's holdings contain works of the pictorial, graphic, sculptural, decorative and applied art of Japan, China, Korea, Iran, India, Vietnam, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Mongolia and more than 100 other countries.
The Museum also contains delightful and unique samples of the ancient and medieval (including Buddhist) sculpture; of the classical and modern pictorial art (including scrolls); of the decorative lacquer works; of textile and jewellery; of the wood and bone carving; of the miniature sculpture; weaponry; and household items.
A special place of the Museum's permanent exhibitions is occupied by works of two outstanding artists, philosophers, scientists, and enlighteners Nicholas and Svetoslav Roerich. In parallel with permanent exhibitions, the Museum regularly organizes exhibitions of works by prominent cultural professionals from Russia and other countries.
