The Icebreaker Krasin Museum is the only floating museum-icebreaker in the world.
The Krasin is one of the first icebreakers in the world and had been one of the most powerful before atomic icebreakers. Built to the design of Admiral S. O. Makarov in 1916 in England by the order of Russia, originally it was called Svyatogor. It has unique icebreaking characteristics.
The Krasin is a living legend of the Russian icebreaking fleet. It has been fully restored. All mechanisms and equipment are in good running order and meet all current regulatory requirements.
The museum exposition numbers 688 items (409 of them are the exhibits of the main fund) that reflect the history of shipbuilding, the icebreaking fleet, participation of the Krasin in rescue operations, scientific and research arctic expeditions, and in the allied transport escorts during the Great Patriotic War. Most of the exposition is dedicated to the rescue of the expedition of Umberto Nobile after the Italia dirigible crashed in 1928.
The most valuable (unique) collections are:
– the main engine unit of the icebreaker;
– the drawing designs of the Svyatogor icebreaker (Krasin) of 1916;
– the personal property of the crew members.
