Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior on Gorodu (Yaroslavl)

10 Kotoroslnaya Embankment, Yaroslavl.

It is said that "as early as Yaroslavl feudal princes' time" a wooden church of the Transfiguration stood in the same place where the present church stands. It was a parish named "the Church of the Transfiguration on Gorodu". The name comes from the "town market square", which was situated at the same location. The 1658, the "Great Fire" burned the wooden church to the ground.

Construction of a four-column church with five domes in the main market square of the mediaeval Yaroslavl was finished in 1672. The inspiration for the design came from the layout of the Church of St. John Chrysostom in Korovniki. A tented-roof side chapel duplicating the bell tower and big domes placed upon high drums that equal the main building in height paralleled that of Korovniki Church almost exactly. Despite of the modest decorations, the Church still stands out against Kotorosli Embankment thanks to its solid silhouette. Some frescoes that date back to 1693 have survived in the Church's interior.

Buildings with drums, which are crowned with massive cupolas and excel the main construction in height, are typical of Yaroslavl churches.

The frescoes are the most prominent attraction of the building. In 1693, the Church was painted by 22 artists who were led by Lavrenty Sevastianov, Fyodor Fyodorov, and Ivan Dmitriyev. The most senior artist, Lavrenty Sevastianov, painted icons in Yaroslavl Fyodorovskaya Church together with famous Russian painter and iconographer Gury Nikitin. Lavrenty was the son of a famous Yaroslavl master Sevastian Dmitriyev, who worked in Moscow Kremlin's Armoury for 40 years. In 1640, Dmitriyev painted the first Yaroslavl Posad Church of St. Nikola Nadein.

Sevastian's team included only fresco experts. During one summer, the huge church, along with its altars and porches was painted by the artists over for a seven week period.

The painting was done in the well-established Yaroslavl style with its characteristic separation of walls into narrow tiers. There were seven tiers all together. The upper four tiers were dedicated to the Christ's earthly life. The fifth and the sixth tiers demonstrated the History of the Life-giving Cross. The seventh tier was an ornamental frieze.

The frescoes' subjects, created with support from tradespeople, include elements of the everyday life. In one of the frescoes Saint Helena rides in a peasant cart on her way to Palestine. The churches along the path, churches that were founded by the saint herself in the holy land, resemble simple timber buildings of Yaroslavl Posad.

In 1918, the Church was damaged during a mutiny, the paintings survived thanks to the efforts of P. Baranovsky.

In 1919 and 1920, the Church was reconstructed.

In 1926, the Church was shut down and used as a warehouse.

In July 2003, the Church was handed to the Yaroslavl Diocese.
