The Church of the Saviour in Ryady was first mentioned in the 1628 Kostroma cadastre: "and the church was dedicated to the Saviour, the Procession of the Venerable Wood of the Cross."

A stone church with a bell tower replaced the wooden one in 1766. The construction was financially supported by merchant Stefan Belov. Ivan Bazhenov, a church historian, said that the Church had two altars: the first one was dedicated to the Saviour, and the second altar to the Intercession. He mentioned several remarkable things of the Saviour's Church including the ancient Icon of the Procession of the Venerable Wood of the Cross and the Icon of Saint Martyrs Gury, Samon, and Aviv (the local sacred object).

In 1794, famous Kostroma architect Stepan Vorotilov designed and built a gallery, facing the Volga River, with a big bell tower above the arch. The walls were painted in the 1880s by professionals, educated in Academy, from Bolshiye Soli Pasad, Kostromskoi Uyezd (or by Y. Sorokin, or G. Demidov).

In the 1920s, the Church was closed and re-equipped as the Kostroma Antireligious Museum, the centre of atheistic advocacy.

In 1931, the bell tower and five church domes were destroyed by order of the Narkompros's Scientific Department (the People's Commissariat for Education).

In 1974, the Church was scheduled to be reconstructed as an architectural monument. The reconstruction was completely finished in the early 1980s. By order of the Kostroma Culture Department, the church crosses were replaced with spires. The Church was used as a part of the Krasniye Ryady Mall. In the late 1980s, the building was occupied by exhibition halls of the Kostroma History and Architecture Museum and Reserve.

In 1992, on Kostroma diocese's initiative the bell tower was equipped with bells. Since then, every noon, bells can be heard in the Kostroma centre.
