Church of St. Michael the Archangel (Gorodets)

14 Zagorodnaya Street, Gorodets.

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel is a cultural monument of federal importance.

The first documented information about the Church is dated to the early 14th century.

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel, a former cathedral is a burial vault of Gorodets princes who lived in Gorodets principality, i. e. as late as the 14th century. A church was formerly situated at this place where Prince Andrey of Gorodets (son of Alexander Nevsky) was buried, but in 1368 it was struck by lightning and burned out. Later the church was built again by Prince Boris of Gorodets, but it also went up in flames.

A brick church, constructed in 1707 to 1712, was a one-dome quadrangle without columns; the frater had a southern Side Chapel of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist and a column-shaped steepled bell tower. A northern Side Chapel of Joy of All Sorrows was attached in 1860.

In 1935, the Church was closed. It was not until 1991 that the Church was returned to the faithful.

At present, the Church is reconstructed and functions.
