The Feodosiya Museum of Regional Studies (or the Museum of Antiques; the Museum, for short) was founded on 13th May 1811 by Semyon Bronevsky, a mayor of Feodosiya.
The Museum is one of Ukraine's oldest city museums and one of Europe's oldest museums.
A museum was needed, because a large number of antiques had been amassed in Feodosia by that time. The first building of the Museum served more as a repository of antiques rather than a proper museum. However, the holdings were gradually growing, thanks to purchases of antiques, donations, and archaeological excavations.
Initially, the Museum was housed by a Turkish mosque in the centre of Feodosiya, but in the late 1860s the authorities of Taurida Governorate handed over the building to the Lutheran community of Feodosiya. In 1871, the collections of the Museum were transferred to a building that had been built specially for the Museum; the construction works were funded by the painter Ivan Aivazovsky. In the mid-1920s, the Museum occupied the former house of this famous marine painter and stayed there until 1988. Later, the Museum was allocated with the building of a former maternity hospital, which is a monument of the late 19th and early 20th century architecture (occupied by the Genuezskaya Hotel before the 1917 Russian Revolution, the building is known as Lagorio House).
At present, the holdings of the Museum contain around 100,000 exhibits. The eight rooms of the Museum present not only archaeological monuments, but also many ethnographic and documentary materials; collections of ancient postcards, minerals and petrified remains; and a herbarium. The unique dioramas of the room of nature give an idea about landscapes of the south-western Crimea. A part of a rich collection of ancient stone slabs is placed in the open air in an original lapidary yard of the Museum paved with tiles from the Middle Ages as well as the 19th and the first half of the 20th century.
In parallel with the permanent exhibition sections, the Museum hosts various exhibitions related to regional studies, the history of the city, and the works of art by Feodosiya inhabitants. Researchers of the Museum frequently take part in archaeological excavations and exchange copies of documents with other museums. The materials obtained by them are constantly enlarging and improving the collection of the Museum.
The Museum Factory in Nizhny Tagil was founded in January of 1989. The Museum is based on the territory of non-operated Kuibyshev Metallurgical Plant. The decommissioning of Kuibyshev Metallurgical Plant, started in 1960s, was accomplished in 1987.
