The Karadag Dolphinarium is situated within the Karadag Biostation, in the picturesque place at the bottom of Kara-Dag Volcano near the village of Kurortnoye (between the cities of Sudak and Feodosiya). Water is supplied to the Dolphinarium from the sea.
The Biostation was established in 1901 by Terenty Vyazemsky. The scientists of the Biostation study the grandeur of nature in Karadag that combines land and sea, mountains and plains, forests, steppes and near deserts.
The area was closed for unauthorized persons till 1991. Originally the Karadag Dolphinarium was not for entertaining but studying the dolphin for military purposes. Serious scientific researches were made here and gave the unique results.
After the collapse of the USSR, dolphins and seals, kept in the Dolphinarium, began to perform for public. It was thanks to the entertaining shows that the Karadag Dolphinarium survived in 1990s. Today, the scientists work here again, and the Dolphinarium goes on tours from time to time.
The Dolphinarium has two pools.
The Larger Pool.
The enclosed dolphinarium is a large white building with many windows. It was originally designed not for performances but researches. There is a large pool, where dolphins perform for public, and several small sections, where seals live. The dolphin Malish and a seal were the first performers of the Dolphinarium. People know Malish from "People and Dolphins" film.
You can view a show from any side of the pool and from the balcony too. Performances last for 45 minutes. The Dolphinarium is opened during the warm season only.
The Smaller Pool.
It is a small building with a pool for marine mammals and a seawater aquarium.

The Blue Lagoon is a natural system of pools situated among volcanic piles not far from Reykjavik. Thanks to its seismic origin the Iceland is like a living body. It "breathes" with geysers, volcanoes, and hot springs.
