Summer Theatre, City Lyceum in the Shevchenko Park (Dnepropetrovsk)Shevchenko Park, Shevchenko Square, Dnepropetrovsk, Metro station: "Vokzalnaya". The Dnepropetrovsk City Lyceum (the Summer Theatre) was constructed in 1977 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the 1917 Russian October Revolution. It was designed by the famous architect Pavel Nirenberg who also designed the Dnepropetrovsk Circus, the building of the Dnepropetrovsk Executive Committee and many other well-known buildings. However, the City Lyceum was Nirenberg's most treasured work. His idea was that trees growing through metal roofing are symbolic of the ties of between nature and artifice. The architect designed the unusual suspended roof to improve the acoustic characteristics of the building. The city authorities were quite skeptical of its reliability and required the construction to be tested. The metal containers were filled with water to burden the roof as much as possible. Nirenberg himself was not just a ringside spectator but entered the building to prove that he would stake his life for his design. This action was so convincing that nobody had any further questions. |
