The Dnepropetrovsk City Lyceum (the Summer Theatre) was constructed in 1977 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the 1917 Russian October Revolution. It was designed by the famous architect Pavel Nirenberg who also designed the Dnepropetrovsk Circus, the building of the Dnepropetrovsk Executive Committee and many other well-known buildings. However, the City Lyceum was Nirenberg's most treasured work. His idea was that trees growing through metal roofing are symbolic of the ties of between nature and artifice. The architect designed the unusual suspended roof to improve the acoustic characteristics of the building. The city authorities were quite skeptical of its reliability and required the construction to be tested. The metal containers were filled with water to burden the roof as much as possible. Nirenberg himself was not just a ringside spectator but entered the building to prove that he would stake his life for his design. This action was so convincing that nobody had any further questions.

The newly opened Summer Theatre held the All Union Festival of Soviet Songs, broadcast for the whole country. It was conducted by Alexander Maslyakov, and already very popular master of ceremonies. During one of her interviews, Tamara Gvardtsitely confessed that it was the great acoustics of the Summer Theatre that helped her to win the competition. And it was in this very Lyceum where, in 1982, Joseph Kobzon sang "Dnepropetrovsk is my home city!" for the first time. Since then the song has always been an informal anthem of the city.

The building was constructed by Dneprotyazhstroy Group and Dneprostalkostruktsiya Group with the active participation of the working people of Dnepropetrovsk.
