Church of St. John the Baptist, Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (Kirov)

54 Svobody Street, Kirov.

The construction of the Church of St. John the Baptist started in 1714. Documents indicate the year 1723 as the year when the construction was completed. The Church was erected in stone.

In 1898–1899, the architect Ivan Charushin rebuilt the Church, increasing the height of the main nave.

In the 20th century, Saint Pious John of Kronstadt performed services here, leaving a good trace in the Church's history: thanks to his support through prayer, a stone, two-storey church school was built near the Church (in 1994–2006, that site used to house Vyatka Orthodox Gymnasium, Vyatka being the city's name before 1934).

In the summer of 2004, the Parish of the Church of St. John the Baptist solemnly celebrated the centenary of the visit by Saint Pious John of Kronstadt. In the Church, a holy face of St John was placed; the face contained a commemorative inscription saying that on 10 July 1904 (New Style) he celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Church. Since then, on 10 July every year, the Church has hosted a prayer service to Saint Pious John of Kronstadt.

In Soviet times, many residents of the city did not associate the Church of St. John the Baptist with a temple, because since the late 1960s it had housed a planetarium. A panorama of the starry sky was depicted under the dome, and the auditorium occupied ... the altar area.

In 1994, the Church was handed over to the Diocese, which marked the beginning of its revival. The Church was restored gradually: the bell tower was reconstructed; painting was made anew, in the course of several years its side-altars were consecrated, first the side altar dedicated to the Georgian Icon of the Mother of God and then that of Saint Pious Zachary and Saint Pious Elizabeth.

Among the Parish's benefactors, there are many famous people. The writer Albert Likhanov, the president of the Russian Children's Foundation, who in 1935 was baptised in the Church, donated a seven-layer chandelier for the central side-altar. The plaque on the Church's facade, which has remained since the times of the planetarium, has also helped to some extent: the state allocated funds for the restoration of an "architectural monument of federal significance". Thanks to that, the central side-altar was completely reconstructed, a new iconostasis was created, the stone fence was reconstructed in its historic location, a heating system was installed and wall painting was cleaned and restored. The Kirov painters Viktor Kharlov and Vladimir Vostrikov reconstructed the artistic images from the century before last in accordance with the style and concept of their predecessor.

The Church's complete consecration took place on 10 September 2005, eleven years after the building was handed back to the believers. In honour of this landmark event, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the central side-altar by Metropolitan Chrysanth of Vyatka and Slobodskoy.
