On 21st November 2001, the day of St. Michael the Archangel, the protector of Kiev, the Museum of the History of St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery (the Museum, for short; the Monastery, for short) was solemnly opened; the Monastery existed from 1108 to 1936 and was re-established in 1998 and is one of the most significant Ukraine's architectural and historical ensembles.

The Museum occupies the second tier of the cathedral's bell tower and part of St. Barbara's Block.

Here, valuables of the Monastery scattered around the world are being collected little by little. The first exhibits were objects found during excavations on the premises of the Monastery, namely, treasures of grivna (coins of Kievan Rus) and of jewellery. The Museum has on display a reliquary for St. Barbara's relics made of silver in 1694 on money of Ivan Mazepa, a famous hetman (head) of the autonomous Zaporozhian Host. Among the exhibits are also ancient silver holy doors that have recently been returned to the Monastery by the Lavra Museum.

From 11th July to 19th July 2008, the Museum performed a complete reorganisation of its exhibitions. In the three rooms of the Museum, one may see artistically made cult objects of the 12th –19th centuries that decorated the old St. Michael's Cathedral. All these objects are acquired on public money from private collectors. The following is among the exhibits: an 18th century iconostasis tear, old-print and church books, three icons of St. Barbara, a 19th century icon of the Saviour Not-Made-by-Hands, an 18th century riza of St. Iliya's icon, a 19th century floor tile, a 1896 church bell with a wooden handle and other objects of cult and art.

Currently, the Museum has on display 11 fragments of the frescoes that were returned by Russia's museums in 2001 and 2004. Since original mosaics and frescoes require special preservation conditions, they cannot be situated in the rebuilt church and are kept in the Museum instead. One of the most valuable exhibits is a high relief depicting St. Michael the Archangel, the authentic variant that used to decorate the pediment of the western facade of the Monastery; the relief was made in the 18th century, of sheet copper and covered with gold leaf. Because of its the poor technical state, the high relief did not occupy its former place, but became an exhibit of the Museum. At the same time, its exact copy was placed on the pediment; just like the original, the copy was made of sheet copper and covered with gold leaf. By the way, the Klichko brothers, the famous Ukrainian athletes, took a role of art patrons in this enterprise.
