Over more than 100 years of existence the State Historical Museum has met expectations of its founders and fans.
The Museum collection numbers about 4.5 million items; the documents archives contain more than 12 million pages.
The historical building of the Museum on Red Square was completely restored; the original appearance of the interiors was reproduced; the building was partially reconstructed and its engineering equipment meets all modern requirements.
Following the century-long tradition, every hall has its exposition on the history of Russia from the earliest times to the beginning of the 20th century. When the neighbouring building of the former Museum of Vladimir Lenin is given to the State Historical Museum, it will be possible to make an exposition of the history of the 20th century as an integral part and course of historical and cultural tradition of the country.
Over the last six years, about 200 different exhibitions have been held in the Museum, in the regions of Russia and abroad. This activity was highly evaluated. In 2003, the creative team of the Museum was awarded the State Prize of Russia.
The treatises of the Museum scientists, catalogues of large exhibitions, collections of articles of scientific conferences were recognized and became popular among specialists and all those who were interested in the history of Russia, its spiritual and material culture.
