The Kiev's Koleso Theatre (the Theatre, for short) welcomed its spectators on 28 May 1988. Led by their ideological inspiration, Irina Klishchevskaya, the company received their own building at 8 Andreyevsky Descent.
In the 19th century, the building was home to a Polish jeweller, while in the 20th century it was occupied by Soviet "communal" (shared) flats.
Today, the Koleso Theatre is an integral part of Kiev's cultural life, a favourite leisure destination not only for Kiev's residents, but also for the city's many visitors. The Theatre's repertoire contains over 26 productions.
There are two auditoriums in the Theatre. The main auditorium, which seats 70, is situated in the first floor. Such a small size strikes first-time visitors: the actors are within arm's reach.
The Theatre's cafe is considered to be its second auditorium. Situated on the ground floor, the cafe provides a home-like atmosphere for performances, making spectators feels as if they directly participate in the action.
The Theatre's performances were received with ovations in the USA, France, Scotland, Poland, Russia, Romania, Turkey, the former Yugoslavia, and Bulgaria. The Theatre has participated in and has won awards at many international theatre festivals.
