The history of the Ukraina Cinema, the most technically advanced and cosy in Kiev, began in the early part of the exuberant 20th century.

The first and the most important event in the history of the Ukraina Cinema took place in 1903. The Hippo-Palace Circus was designed by the architect Eduard-Ferdinand Bradtman and constructed in Nikolayevskaya Street (now Gorodetskogo Street). The Circus was owned by the Russian famous horse tamer Krutikov. It was a genuinely unique building for that time. First, it was the only two-storied circus in Europe; secondly, the Hippo-Palace could seat 2,000 people at a time, a large audience even by today's standards. Thirdly, the Circus building featured unique acoustic characteristics that were beneficial for various events and concerts. The great opera singers Fyodor Shalyapin, Leonid Sobinov and Titta Ruffo appeared on the Circus's stage in its time. Visitors of the Hippo-Palace also witnessed unique and inimitable performances of Vladimir Mayakovsky and Aleksandr Kuprin.

In that way, the Hippo-Palace in Nikolayevskay Street was the centre the city's cultural life in the early 20th century.

Today, it is as it was a hundred years ago. The only difference is a white screen canvas instead of the arena and film stars instead of classical actors.

Many events changing the life of Ukraine took place in the now Ukraina Cinema Complex. On 20 April 1918, the Ukrainian Hetman Pavlo Skoropadskyi was elected in this building.

The tragedy of the Second World War ruined many lives and significantly changed the appearances of numerous cities including Kiev. Karl Marks Street (then Nikolayevskaya Street) was severely damaged. In late September 1941, the Circus was bombed by the retreating Germans. In 1945, the building was completely demounted, because it was impossible to reconstruct the ruins.

26 May 1964. 7 Karl Marks Street. It was a very warm day when the Ukraina Cinema, the first widescreen cinema in Ukraine, was triumphantly opened. The building was designed by the architects A. Dobrovolsky, A. Kosenko and V. Sozansky. A photograph of the Cinema facade decorated with a stained glass bay-window (by the artist Z. Rogachyova), that was replaced with a patterned panel in 1980, was continuously published by leading newspapers of Kiev.

Since 1962 until now, the Ukraina Cinema has been called the Cinema of Premieres. All showings of the best Soviet and foreign films have always been preceded by long queues at the box offices.

In the Soviet times, when the film industry was a part of the general policy of the state, the Ukraina Cinema was the main one in the country and traditionally held numerous film events and meetings with Soviet and foreign film stars. Many Kiev citizens still gratefully remember the happy times in the company of popular actors. The Grand Auditorium of the Cinema is famous for performers of the 1960s and the 1965 All-Union premiere of the film "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" directed by Sergei Parajanov.

The Cinema has always been the technically best in Kiev. It had two auditoriums seating 663 and 220 people respectively. Visitors of the Cinema liked the special home-like atmosphere before and during film shows. Today, the Cinema still affords this cosiness and serves as a peaceful retreat in the nosy and anxious centre of Kiev.

On 6 February 2001, the Cinema was opened after being reconstructed.

The Ukraina Cinema differs from other Kiev cinemas with its technique. Both auditoriums feature the latest projection equipment including the seven-channel Dolby Digital Surround Ex system meeting all sound requirements of Dolby Laboratories Inc. The extra Dolby Digital surround channel distributes sound more accurately (equally to every seat) and perfectly conveys all special effects. The surround-channel is reproduced by loud speakers situated in the back of the auditorium. The main left and right channels are played by wall speakers. Thanks to the Dolby Digital Surround Ex system every spectator has an increased feeling of reality of the film scenes.

The Red Auditorium (456 seats) and the Blue Auditorium (148 seats) are equipped with acoustic panels and the most state-of-the-art pearlescent screens of 14.5 m by 6.2 m (47.6 ft. by 20.3 ft.) and 7.75 m by 3.30 m (25.4 ft. by 10.8 ft.) respectively as well as very comfortable Spanish Love Seats with cup and popcorn holders. In the lobby, the visitors can entertain themselves with six TV sets, a TV-projector, colourful advertising light boxes and three coffee bars offering a wide range of traditional snacks and beverages. On the first floor, the visitors can enjoy a rest in the comfortable summer veranda.

Visiting the Ukraina Cinema will be a special occasion for the whole family. It is cool inside in summer and warm enough in winter. Everybody will feel at home in any season. The Cinema lobby is designed in the classical cinematic style; its fancy yellow and blue sofas will impress anyone.

The Italian and French restaurant Fellini is situated in the right wing of the Cinema. It can seat up to 120 guests simultaneously. The menu offers a wide choice of traditional Italian pasta; the wine list includes classical Italian, French and Georgian as well as Argentine and Chilean wines. The choice of cocktails offered by the restaurant can gratify the tastes of any visitor.

It is no exaggeration to say that the Ukraina Cinema is the most popular and prestigious leisure and recreational facility in Kiev.
