In the early 19th century, an amateur theatre functioned at the house at 20B Andreyevsky Descent; the house was owned by Ivan Shatrov, a patron of the arts. Here, music and song evenings were held, theatrical productions were performed; this house was visited by famous people of art, members of aristocratic families, industrialists, patrons of the arts and politicians. Now, this superbly decorated historic house, a monument of the 19th century architecture, serves as the main building of Kiev Drama Theatre on Podil (the Theatre on Podil or the Theatre, for short).

After a redesign done by the Kiev City Administration and the Kiev Main Directorate for Culture and Art, the Theatre Lounge was opened in this house. The same building hosts shows from the current Theatre's repertoire and evenings with actors and other famous people, while, at the same time, housing the theatre management.

The Theatre on Podil proper was founded in 1987.

Vitaly Malakhov, an ingenious stage director who holds the title of Ukraine's Meritorious Artist, is the founder and head stage director of the Theatre on Podil.

Malakhov's company, which has since adopted his theatre aesthetics, was shaped the same year; it is a team of like-minded people, of "knights of the stage", a closely-knit artistic family of a high professional and creative level. Malakhov's productions always interest the public greatly, he always manages to surprise the audience, and his performances attract capacity crowds.

At the Kiev Pectoral Theatre Festival, the Theatre's production of Aleksandr Korneychuk's In the Steppes of Ukraine won the first-degree award for the best company of the year in 1999, while Malakhov himself won the best stage director award of the same festival.

The Theatre's company has brought Ukraine's dramatic art to America, Great Britain, Greece, Germany, Mexico, Poland, Egypt and Turkey. It has already become a tradition of the Theatre to go on tour to the famous Edinburgh Festival.

The Theatre has made joint productions with stage directors from Germany, Finland and Poland. At the Theatre, spectators will find an original style, an acute sense of the boundary between sincerity and pretence, combined with a powerful outburst of artistry, metaphor and innovative style. The Theatre's repertoire contains over 50 plays.
