Dormition Cathedral, Assumption Cathedral (Vladimir)

56 Sobornaya Square, Vladimir.

Dormition Cathedral is a world-famous monument of Old Russian architecture. It is a complex of buildings that were constructed at various times. The original cathedral was built from 1158 to 1161, during Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky's reign, on a high bank of the Klyazma River in the heart of the city centre. It was considered not only the main church of Vladimir-Suzdal Principality, the city's cultural, political, and religious centre, but also the mother church of the whole Russia.

A chronicler said, "God brought masters from all over the world to Vladimir." They included foreign white-stone technique experts from Romance West. It was a refusal of sorts of Kiev's assistance and artistic traditions. The white stone was brought from Volga Bulgaria.

In 1161, skilful isographs from Greece painted the walls.

On 21 September 1164, the greatest Russian icon, the wonder-working Icon of the Theotokos, was brought to Dormition Cathedral, for which it was originally built. Since then, the icon has been named the Theotokos of Vladimir.

After the 1185 fire, when Prince Vsevolod III of Vladimir reigned, the Cathedral was reconstructed. The old church turned out to be rounded by other buildings erected from the south, north, and west. By the 13th century, as a result from the reconstructions, the Cathedral became larger and gained five domes with golden central and silver side cupolas. It also featured two levels of zakomaras in the upper part. The Cathedral was built of white stone using the technique of stone-faced rubble masonry. Its interior walls, vaults, and pylons were painted with frescoes.

The Cathedral of the Dormition has preserved some fragments of frescoes made by unknown artists of the mid-12th century, as well as an art of work by Andrei Rublev, the genius Old Russian artist, who painted the Cathedral in 1408. He also painted icons for the iconostasis. Most of the frescoes that currently exist date back to the late 19th century. Relics of Vladimir princes and their relatives, bishops and deans lie in the Cathedral's cemetery.

Dormition Cathedral, with a side chapel dedicated to St. George, is the main functional church of the Vladimir-Suzdal diocese.
