Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and St. Philip the Apostle (Veliky Novgorod)
34 Nikolskaya Street, Veliky Novgorod.
An original stone church was built from 1383 to 1384 by posadniks (eng.: mayors) Rodislav Danilovich, Ustin, and Philip. In 1526, it was reconstructed.
Two churches were erected at the place in 1527 and 1528. The Church of St. Philip was intended for Novgorod boyar families, and the Church of St. Nicholas — for citizens of neighbouring villages.
First, these were two independent parish churches having one base. The Church of St. Nicholas adjoined the Church of St. Philip from the north.
In 1608, two parishes merged.
In 1659 to 1660, the Church of St. Nicholas became a three-storey building.
In the 18th century, the Church of St. Nicholas was completely rebuilt; the third storey was removed; the Church was transformed into a side chapel. At the same time, a bell tower was constructed and joined to the north-western corner of the Church of St. Nicholas.
In 1899, the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was almost completely destroyed. Only the western wall, traces on the mutual wall, and foundation remains survived.
In the early 20th century, the northern side chapel of St. Nicholas was abolished.
In 1962, since the Church of St. Philip was going to function again, research and reconstruction works were held there. The original basement portals were discovered and renovated.
In 1969 to 1970, the monument was measured and studied. The walls remains were dug out. A rebuilding project was drafted.
In 1978 and 1979, the monument reconstruction was stated in accordance with the project by N. Kuzmina.
Today, the architectural monument looks like a 16th-century building; the western porch and the 18th-century bell tower were preserved. The two churches are equal in height but different in space. The Church of St. Philip has an apse; the basement and the gallery are mutual. The building is topped with two big and two small domes.
This is the only twin church in Novgorod. Its history throws back.
The Church keeps a very honourable Icon of St. Panteleon the Healer which is considered to be a wonderworking icon. The citizens of Novgorod come to it to ask for health for their relatives and friends.
To the southeast of Yaroslav's Court, close to the bank of the Volkhov River, two churches, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel and the Church of the Annunciation in the Trade Mart (Vitkoviy Lane), connected by a brick passage, are situated.
