For a century and a half, the Gus Crystal Production Plant belonged to a family of nobility, the Maltsovs, who not only founded the original school of the Russian glass art and created its traditions, but were also the originators of the unique collection of the Matlsovs Museum of Crystal (the Museum, for short).
Being one of the best Russian museums of glass art, the Museum wedded well with the interiors of the St. George's Cathedral, which is a magnificent monument of architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The interior of the cathedral and the superb collection of crystal are perceived as one, as something bright, jolly, and triumphant.
Crystal has a songful voice. If one ably touches an edge of a crystal product, it will make a soft, melodious, and ringing sound. Beautiful objects sparkle with red, violet and green lights. Marvellous products of the 18th century. Heavy carafes, diamond pattern wine glasses, wine bottles delicately painted with golden patterns. Glass of the 19th century is extremely varied. Lead crystal, intricate diamond pattern brought to perfection. Talented masters of the century knew how to "catch" the sunlight and make crystal sparkle.
Multilayer, coloured glass and glass imitating silver and gold arrives. These are products in the Oriental style (e.g., pitchers and hookahs) that target Asian markets.
Made based on samples of products by the great French artist Emil Galle and covered with diluted blue and violet or golden and brown landscape drawings, multilayer vases and small bottles are unique.
The fame of the Gus crystal has spread beyond Russia. Amazing skills and talents of the old masters are marked by gold medals awarded by Paris, Vienna and Chicago exhibitions.
Traditions of the old masters are being carefully kept and developed by contemporary artists, graduates of university-level art schools. Each artist possesses his or her own style, his or her unique approach to the methods of self-expression. The works by the artist Ye. Rogov reflect beauty of the nature of his home region, the Meshchyora Lowlands. The works by O. Kozlova are tender and lyric. The works of plastic and engraving by A. Kurilov are superb. The compositions and multi-item sets by V. Korneyev, V. Kasakin, V. Zaytsev and P. Aksenov are perfect in shape and rich with colours.
The collection of unique auteur works located in the central nave on a podium is crowned by the Hymn to Glass composition that dominates the altar area.
In January of 2002, President Putin visited the Museum. The Russian leader was deeply impressed by the unique works of the Gus masters in the interior of the magnificent monument of architecture and pictorial art.
V. Putin wrote in the guestbook: "The unique museum, the unique people! Thank you. V. Putin. 6th January 2002."
All this shows that the Museum has become an important element of the historical and cultural life of Gus-Khrustalny and a very popular tourist route as a part of the Smaller Golden Ring.
The Old Vladimir exposition is situated in the building of a former water tower, at a short distance from the Golden Gates. Currently, the tower hosts the original exhibition that tells about the city of Vlad...
